SOUL's and VIBE's Poem Analysis

               Based form what I can see,it seems that some people have (as usual) different interpretations of those poems from SOUL's and VIBE's.Therefore,I took the liberty of showing how to interpret those poems step by step.

WARNING : This is going to be too long.

I'll start from here...

SOULS:
(ten o tozasu taiyou)
The sun that locks Heaven.
VIBES:
(yoru o hazuru tsuki)
The moon that eclipses the night.

               After reading an essay from this link ---> Ichigo x Orihime x Rukia's connection,I have noticed how the author was so adamant to associate Orihime with the poems from SOUL's and VIBE's.First,he/she brought up that Orihime's attacks are all related to HEAVENS,and connects it with Ichigo's and Rukia's.Apparently,he/she was trying to prove that Ichigo's poem might be referring to Orihime,because of the word "Heaven" in there.

and...

               Obviously,the author was trying to connect Orihime with the symbolism "Black Sun" and "White Moon" by trying to prove that Orihime is the "Sun".

although...

First,I suggest everyone to read the article from this link ---> Analyzing Poetry

Then,let's apply it on the poems from SOUL's and VIBE's.

Elements of Poetry

Denotation and Connation Words in poems have denotations, or literal, easy-to-understand dictionary meanings, and connotations, or figurative, less specific and less direct meanings. The latter is the more important in poetry than the former. The figurative, or connotative, meaning of a word means everything that the word might imply besides its direct, dictionary meaning.

For example, the literal, denotative meaning of the word apple is something like this: It is the fruit of the apple tree, anywhere from gold to dark red in color, and it has seeds and a sweet taste. The literal meaning of a word, its denotation, can usually be defined in simple, clear language and can be understood right away.

SOUL's and VIBE's

               The literal,denotative meaning of the "Black Sun" is something like this : It is the Sun blocked by the Moon as seen from the Earth,or something what we call "Solar Eclipse" where the Sun looks Black,because of the Moon's shadow.The "White Moon" is the Moon that reflects the light from the Sun.

The connotative meaning of a word, however, is much different. A red apple in a poem is never merely a red apple, but probably implies a lot of different things.

SOUL's and VIBE's

                The Black Sun and White Moon is never merely a Black Sun and White Moon,but probably implies a lot of different things.

The red color may symbolize passion, fertility, anger--anything one can associate with the color red could be a possible meaning.

SOUL's and VIBE's

                The "Black" color may symbolize a cold and negative aspect suggesting passivity, death, ignorance, or evil,or Power, sexuality, sophistication, formality, elegance, wealth, mystery, fear, evil, unhappiness, depth, style, evil, sadness, remorse, anger, anonymity, underground, good technical color, mourning, death (Western cultures)....anything one can associate with the color Black could be a possible meaning.The "White" color may symbolize innocence, life, light, purity, or enlightenment.

The apple itself could symbolize the Tree of Life, it could symbolize knowledge, Adam and Eve and their Fall from Grace, the harvest in fall, the forbidden, Sir Isaac Newton or Johnny Apple seed--perhaps a combination of these things.

SOUL's and VIBE's

               The Sun and Moon itself can symbolize Ichigo and Rukia with or without the colors Black and White.

Importantly, words do not mean anything and everything in a poem. Thus the reader should look at the poem as a whole and try to figure out which implications make the most sense within that poem.

               Words do not mean anything and everything in a poem,because they have a specific meaning.Therefore,saying that we can interpret them in many ways,doesn't mean that they do have a lot of meaning.

Imagery

Images are very concrete "word pictures" having to do with the five senses--touch, smell, taste, sound, movement, and especially sight.

Importantly, poets often place images in opposition to each other. This creates what is known as "tension." Tension is often an important clue to the meaning of a poem; it also creates drama and interest and is a key to paradox (see below). One should look out for strange contrasts in images in the process of analyzing poems, and think about the responses they arouse in a reader. Images can be part of similes and metaphors, though they are not always (see below).

just like this...

I think it's also been said that "because it shows in both the SOULS and VIBES books, Ichigo's and Rukia's mouths in their side pics"...it must mean love? Then I guess...in the regular manga, everyone else who shows "parallel" panels like that must be in love with each other too...

               Hmm,I think it wasn't the images that made them think that it might be "love",rather,it was the poem that made them think that way,just like this certain someone have explained in his/her essay "Sun and Moon, mangá and Kamui’s legend."

               From what I can  see and remember (sorry I couldn't remember the links),when they mentioned the images from those poems,they are just trying to point out that the poems are referring to Ichigo and Rukia.I haven't seen anyone saying that it was because it shows in both the SOULS and VIBES books, Ichigo's and Rukia's mouths in their side pics"...it must mean love?Hmm,in any case,whether they think that it was romantic or not is irrelevant to the topic.The point is,images can  be part of similes and metaphors, though they are not always,as said from the article about analyzing poetry.

that's why...

One should look out for strange contrasts in images in the process of analyzing poems, and think about the responses they arouse in a reader.

and this is how some (if not all) of the Ichiruki's used to interpret those images...

RAIN DRAGS BLACK SUN DOWN illustred by Ichigo wearing black yukata with a BLACK background.
This color automatically brings us to the YANG in Japan. Ichigo is the black SUN.

The sun as the pure light that rages within us all
The red fire star that warms us up and is always used as the helper, the sun is like a representation of life. It's essantial to life.

The sun can be a very powerful and deadly weapon.
BLACK SUN: Representing both good and hollow side of his soul to me.

BUT IS DRIED BY WHITE MOON. illustred by Rukia wearing white yukta with a WHITE background. Opposite to Ichigo's picture.
Even if white represents the color of the death in Japan, when can also see that the YIN hold this color too.

That's all for the introductions,let's now move on to...

My interpretation...

Metaphor

A metaphor is a comparison that is not made explicitly--that is, it is not made clearly and directly and is not made with clues such as "like" or "as". It is, instead, an indirect comparison between two things that are basically unalike. In metaphor, the figurative term is substituted for or identified with the literal term, the thing being compared. This is done to make the meaning of a poem more forceful.

For example, the expression "The apple never falls far from the tree" contains a metaphor in which parents or family (literal term) is compared a tree (figurative term), while children (literal term) is compared to an apple (figurative term). The metaphor expresses that children are never very different from the parents or family from which they come.

SOULS:

               "The rain drags black sun down",contains a metaphor in which Ichigo (literal term) is compared to a Sun (figurative term),while the depression/sadness (literal term) is compared to the rain (figurative term).

in poetry/literature...

The sun is an emblem of glory and brilliance. It is also a symbol of authority. It represents happiness, life and spirituality. The rising sun is a symbol of hope. The sun, when not rising, is always blazoned the “sun in splendour.”

in BLEACH...

               Ichigo,being the protagonist represents strength and hope (like the Sun),just like here...

 but,when he is depressed/sad...

               ...Ichigo himself loses hope.A depressed/sad/hopeless person is not like the usual Sun which is bright and radiant,and this is where the color Black enters...

Black

Power, sexuality, sophistication, formality, elegance, wealth, mystery, fear, evil, unhappiness, depth, style, evil, sadness, remorse, anger, anonymity, underground, good technical color, mourning, death (Western cultures).

               Black can also symbolize unhappiness/sadness,and the Sun that loses it's brightness is like a darkened Sun (it was not shining).

..just like what Aizen meant here...

               Aizen is referring to Orihime's gloomy expression that will bring sadness,which is interpreted by some Ichihime's to be KT's hint that she was the "Sun".Hence I am deducting that the Black Sun is referring to a depressed/sad Ichigo.

Personification

Personification is a kind of metaphor, and it means to speak of an impersonal thing, such as a season, a natural element, any object, a country, etc., as though it were a person. For example, look at the line from the popular Seals and Crofts song, "Summer Breeze": "July is dressed up and playing her tune." Here the month of July is spoken of as though it were a woman. July is "dressed up", that is, July is in full swing--flowers are blooming and butterflies are flying, resembling the pattern of a summer dress. Also, to say that July is "playing her tune" is a metaphorical way of saying that birds are singing and nighttime insects and frogs are voicing their mating calls. Thus the figurative term, a woman in a dress playing a tune, is identified with the literal term, a summer month in which nature is at its peak of activity.

SOULS:

               "The rain drags black sun down".In this poem,Black Sun is spoken as if it was Ichigo (he was in the picture).The Sun is Black,resembling the image of the Sun that isn't shining.To say that it was dragged down by the rain is a metaphorical way of saying that he was drowning in depression,hence the Sun (Ichigo) is not as bright as the usual him.Also,the Sun being dragged down can be interpreted as if the Sun was setting down,where it's brightness won't be visible (it's dawning),and the night (darkness) time is coming.

VIBES:

               "But the rain dried by white moon." contains a metaphor in which Rukia (literal term) is compared to the "Moon" (figurative term),while the depression/sadness (literal term) is compared to the rain (figurative term) which is obviously the rain from Ichigo's poem.

in poetry/literature...

White

White : innocence, life, light, purity, or enlightenment

               White can also symbolize LIGHT.The Moon itself was the only light we can see in the middle of the night,hence it was being used as a poetic symbol for HOPE in the middle of darkness (hopelessness).

               The poem says that the rain was dried by the Moon,which means that it is the thing that takes away everything that the rain had brought (depression).

               For those reasons,I am saying that the "Black Sun" being used to symbolize Ichigo,is not the Black Sun that has anything to do with eclipses.Ichigo is simply being compared to the Sun,and it is Black to symbolize that he was depressed.The "White Moon" being used to symbolize Rukia,is not the White Moon that reflects the Sun's light.Rukia is simply compared to the Moon as the only source of light/hope (White) for Ichigo during the darkest moments of his life.

Just like what KT have mentioned here...

SJ: What does Rukia's name mean, and why is it written in katakana?
Kubo-sensei: When I'm working, I jot down names in the margins of my notebook as they come to me. Once on TV, I saw the original type of cosmos in South America.

SJ: You mean, the flower?
Kubo-sensei: Yes. The show mentioned the name of the flower in Latin or something-like "rukia." It sounded like "Kuchiki Rukia" to me, and I wrote this down. When I created the character, I thought Kuchiki really fit as a Soul Reaper (Shinigami) name and called her Kuchiki Rukia. She had her full name from the very beginning. Later on, I learned that the word "rukia" means "light." She's like a ray of light for Ichigo, which makes the name really suit her.

just like here...

               In the manga,it was the thing that KT kept on emphasizing.When there is no one that can bring Ichigo back to his usual self because of his depression,it was always Rukia who can do the job.

just like what Orihime said here...

               Before someone brings me the "Blank" chapter,let me remind you that Ichigo was not depressed when he talked to Orihime,he was just confused whether taking Rukia with him and separate her from her family and friends in the SS would be the right thing to do.Read here for more explanation.Don't get hurt anymore is meant to reassure him that he may not lose his friends because of his hollow (anyone can do that sort of thing,I'll discuss this in another essay).

..the same can be said to these poems...

SOULS:
(ten o tozasu taiyou)
The sun that locks Heaven.
VIBES:
(yoru o hazuru tsuki)
The moon that eclipses the night.

               In these poems,the Sun and the Moon are still the things that symbolizes Ichigo and Rukia (notice that the colors Black and White are not used,this is not because he was hinting that there could be another equation such as Black/White Sun and Black/White Moon.This only supports the theory that they are simply symbolizing the Sun and the Moon and not actually something specific as "Black Sun" and "White Moon").However,the depression being compared to the rain is replaced by the NIGHT and the LOCKED HEAVEN (unhappiness).

yet...

               Based form some Ichihime's essay "Ichigo x Orihime x Rukia's connection"

In regard to the poems themselves, and how they connect to Orihime, Ichigo supposedly "locks Heaven" (which is odd because Urahara says that Ichigo gave Orihime and Chad the KEYS to open their powers...so is this saying that Ichigo is still holding back something from Orihime without knowing?)

               Apparently,the author is trying to prove that the Heaven might be symbolizing Orihime in Ichigo's poem.

though...in symbolism...

Lock

A locked door may suggest that you are attempting to lock out some feelings. E.g.

               Please read everything from the link (click the word LOCK),so you can understand better about this symbolism.

SOUL's and VIBE's

               Apparently,in that poem,it is the "Heaven" that the Sun (Ichigo) was locking out,it is not the Sun trying to lock out something from "Heaven".If that author wants to prove that Orihime represents the Heaven,that could only mean that Ichigo is excluding her (Exclude means to keep out or to refuse to admit).

Synonyms for exclude

verb

To bar

shut out, keep out, reject, ban, debar, eliminate, except, omit, prohibit, disallow, rule out, lock out, shut the door on; see also bar 1, 2.

To expel

banish, suspend, put out, force out, disbar, eject, throw out; see also dismiss 1.

               In other words,that author is unconsciously trying to prove that Ichigo is rejecting Orihime (which is really amusing).

aside from that,it never matches with his/her interpretation with Rukia's...

And Rukia's poem can also be re-worded as "The moon erases the night" (becuz that's the literal translation...). The "night" reminds me of HM, so it makes sense that Rukia wants to eclipse/erase the night for Orihime. She basically screamed as much right before she "died" anyway. ^_^

               Because KT drew Ichigo and Rukia facing each other,contrasting and complimenting each other, that means that the poems are correlating with each other,hence Ichigo's poem should be matched/correlate with Rukia's.The images of Ichigo and Rukia does have a metaphorical meaning,and KT never drew them just because they are the male/female leads.

yet...

               The author was speculating that Ichigo is hiding something from Orihime,which doesn't match/correlate with Rukia wanting to erase the night for Orihime.Or,is this another argument for Rukia as the Ichihime match maker? ^.^ (interesting)

               Based from what I can see,the poems are all about "Lifting someone's spirit up",hence the words that are used should connect with everything about DEPRESSION and EASING UP someone's heart/feelings.So,why is there something that might correlate with "hiding something from someone?"

it's too simple...

Heaven

However, the essence of the word "heaven" worldwide is the transformation of chaos into order (from the Greek kosmos, meaning "ordered universe"), meaninglessness into meaning, and selfishness into compassion. Its attributes are usually joy, contentment, harmony, compassion, bliss, community, love, and a vision of God, or even union with God.

which means...

               Ichigo is locking out happiness (refusing to be happy,because he thought he should be suffering).Ichigo with the Sun sign of Cancer is an emotional type of a character.

Cancer <--- (click the word cancer,or google it to see that most of the descriptions are saying that Cancerians are EMOTIONAL).

Cancer is strongly rooted and often thinks of the past, holding onto mementos and thinking about his childhood.  Emotions run deep in the Cancer individual, and even small slights resonate down to his very core.  When hurt or disappointed, Cancer will retreat completely into his shell and become unreachable for a period of time.

just like Ichigo here...

               When Masaki died,Ichigo stopped smiling.He thought everyone should blame him about his Mom's death.When Rukia was arrested and was going to be executed because of him,he doesn't want to be saved (comment from Urahara).When Yammy defeated him,he thought it was his fault that his NAKAMAS got hurt (he failed to protect them,and no one can bring him back to his usual self).When Ginjo took his powers,he felt so hopeless.

                To make things short,I am saying that Ichigo's poem is about him being depressed,just like what the "Black Sun and White Moon" poems are all about.The locked Heaven symbolizes Ichigo's depression.

Heaven = Happiness not Orihime
Locked Heaven = rejecting happiness/falling in depression and not hiding something from anyone (Orihime in particular).

               Once again,Rukia's is about erasing those depressions from Ichigo's feelings/heart.

Plus...

Ichigo (Black Sun) is incomplete without his other "name" (Black Moon) and Rukia (White Moon) AND Ichigo (Black Sun) are incomplete without Orihime (a Sun!!!)

               Isn't Orihime was the "Heaven"?Suddenly she's also the Sun? (DECIDE please...Sun? or Heaven?)Although,the problem I perceived with this kind of assumptions,is the fact that there is only ONE Sun in Solar system (the common Sun *our Star's name* that is being used in symbolism),so why is there another Sun a.k.a. Orihime (the original ONE)?However,just like what I have explained above,the Black Sun and the White Moon have nothing to do with anything about eclipses,the colors Black and White have a different meaning.

that's why this...

Sun/Orihime = pure light (duh XD)

White Moon/Rukia = the Moon shines with the reflected light of the Sun

There are two kinds of eclipses, to reach a "Black Moon" (and I don't mean a New Moon), and "Black Sun".

Eclipses only occur when the Moon crosses the ecliptice during new or full phase. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is full and passes through Earth's shadow. This can only happen when the Sun, Earth and Moon are on a straight line at full Moon. You might suspect that a lunar eclipse should occur every month, however the Moon orbital motion conspires against this phenomena from occuring.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes through the Moon's shadow. As seen from the Earth, the Moon moves in front of the Sun.
Black Moon/lunar eclipse/Ichigo = eclipsed moon due to the earth and sun, or a New Moon with no sunlight reaching it

Black Sun/solar eclipse/Ichigo = eclipsed sun due to Moon.

               ...arguments shouldn't have been brought up in the first place.Besides,this argument sounds like Orihime is the protagonist of BLEACH,hence she seemed to be the center of everything there.

and...

Evaluations:

It's strange how Rukia represents the White Moon, Orihime the (Light of the) Sun, and Ichigo represents both the Sun and Moon, only rather than the "light" of each, he's the Black Sun/Moon.

               Rukia represents the "White Moon" is strange?yet it was what the poem implies.Orihime the (Light of the) Sun?Yet KT said that Rukia is Ichigo's RAY OF LIGHT (Moon is the only light in the middle of darkness a.k.a. NIGHT).Ichigo represents both the Sun and Moon?It should only be ONE symbol for each.Ichigo is not the Moon (read here).The Black Moon from this person's argument is just Zangetsu's attack,it is not Ichigo.

Combinations:

White Moon <--> Sun

Rukia <--> Orihime (the moon shines because of the Sun, which reminds me of Rukia's speech after fighting the 9th Espada, and her great friendship with Orihime)

               This argument implies that Rukia won't SHINE if it wasn't because of Orihime,despite the fact that Rukia is the HEROINE of BLEACH (she was supposed to SHINE compared to everyone except Ichigo).And it wasn't just Rukia who wanted to save/cares for Orihime,it was all the NAKAMAS (so they are all the White Moon?).

Black Moon <--> White Moon

Connected/one and the same, but polar opposites, and BOTH need the
light or lack of light from the SUN to complete each other. (Ichigo <--> Orihime (connecting them all) <-->Rukia)

Black Sun <--> Sun

Connected/one and the same. Unique in that it's the SAME sun, being eclipsed by the moon. ^^ (Ichigo to Rukia (connecting them all) to Orihime)

Black Moon <--> Sun

The sun's light doesn't reach the moon. (Common Orihime to Ichigo)

Black Moon <--> Sun

Eclipse because the full moon moves into the Earth's shadow. This sounds like the GrimmIchi fight3 where Ichigo falls into the shadows of his hollow without his Sun, Orihime^^ (So it's subtle Ichigo to Orihime)

Black Sun <--> White Moon

Impossible (alone). You can't logically have a combination of both, without the original Sun. The WHITE MOON can eclipse the SUN (which LOL makes it sound like Rukia's blocking Orihime's path of light from reaching Ichigo XDDD) to achieve a BLACK SUN. And a WHITE MOON isn't possible in the first place without the SUN. Which brings us back to the fact thatit's all IchiHimeRuki connected/related.

               This is really amusing,seems like the author doesn't realize what is he/she was talking about...I was referring to this part...

The WHITE MOON can eclipse the SUN (which LOL makes it sound like Rukia's blocking Orihime's path of light from reaching Ichigo XDDD) to achieve a BLACK SUN.

                If Orihime is the Sun,and Rukia is the WHITE MOON eclipsing it,how is this person talking about the WHITE MOON (Rukia) is blocking the path of light from Orihime (the Sun) to Ichigo who is also the Sun?As far as I know,in this kind of phenomena,the Moon is blocking the path of light from the Sun to Earth,and not towards the Sun  itself.The Moon cannot block the Sun's light from itself,right?Unless there are  TWO SUNS,which is not the case.

So really, in all of these possible equasions...RukiHime the most canon ship in Bleach to date still pwns all is the only combination that doesn't need Ichigo. But any equasion with Ichigo needs both Rukia and Orihime, except the BlackMoon/Sun combinations, which really reminds me of volume 19. **romantic sigh**

                The Black Moon won't exist if there is NO MOON in the first place.If there is no WHITE MOON,then what is the Moon that won't reach the Sun's light to make this so called Black Moon happen?This person needs to realize that it was the WHITE MOON that won't receive the Sun's light,hence it will turn out to be Black,sigh....

So...how is that Black Sun and White Moon is JUST Ichigo <--> Rukia (platonic or otherwise)? The answer is that it isn't.

                Unfortunately,it is JUST Ichigo and Rukia who is the Sun and the Moon,the colors Black and White aren't anything related to those combinations that came from eclipses.

But the basic point I'm trying to make is this:

Ichigo needs BOTH Orihime and Rukia, which again, is JUST AS MASTUMOTO SAID.

              Hmm,but the way this person's argument goes is like...Ichigo and Rukia both need Orihime,and not Ichigo needs both Rukia and Orihime.Seriously,try re-reading everything carefully,that's how it really goes.

My Analysis's results...

Ichigo = Sun
Rukia = Moon
Black = depression
White = LIGHT of Hope during the darkest/lowest times of Ichigo's (Sun) life.
Rain = depression/sadness
Locked Heaven = Unhappiness/sadness/depression

seem like ichihime wrote the essay but on other hand they contradict their essay.you forget kawai chappy orihime is suppose pink sun not white sun because orihime official color according to tite kubo is pink.

Honestly... I got a headache by reading that Ichihime's essay.. My brain HUUURRRTSSSS!!!

Your essay is extremely convoluted and often besides the point. For the life of me, I don't understand the need to bring Orihime into the Black Sun, White Moon analysis. It was never about Orihime. Aizen and Ulquiorra calling her "sun" have nothing to do with this. Kubo himself never refereed to Orihime as anything in relation to Ichigo. Black Sun is Ichigo, White Moon is Rukia, there is no debate about it. Rukia stopped Ichigo's rain based on what the manga said, the character book illustrated their association with each other.

@Jukebox,I do want to understand why you think that it was convoluted and besides the point.Did you read everything?What am I trying to point out in my essay is "Orihime has NOTHING to do with the Black Sun and White Moon metaphor"

Perhaps you thought that the essay about Orihime being the Sun is mine?Though,I just post it to show which argument I am referring to.

I even explained that Ichigo and Rukia are made to compliment each other.Not only that their character designs are matched by KT,but as well as their personalities,birthdates,zodiac signs,etc.

Or maybe,I just don't understand your post?But from what I have known,convoluted means TWISTED,and based from your POV,I don't think you would want to see it as twisted,unless you are an IchiHime shipper who believes that Orihime is the "Sun"

Ichigo = black sun
Rukia = white moon
Orihime = the rain (which drags down the black sun)
Therefore ichigoxrukia is the only true ship implied
Evidence orihime said that she wanted to be the rain that connected everyone's hearts but the rain drags down the black sun but the rain is dried by the white moon which means Ichigo and Rukia like each other and orihime likes Ichigo but it is a one sided relationship because Ichigo likes Rukia
